• The EPA reports toxic chemicals in our home cleaning and personal care products are 3 – 5 times more likely to cause cancer than outside pollutants. The EPA warns the nation’s worst pollution is inside our homes. A number of homes tested have toxic chemical levels 70 times higher inside the home than outside.

• The President’s Toxic Substances Strategy Committee warns toxic chemicals in our home environment trigger 90% of all cancers.

• The Consumer Product Safety Commission connects 150 toxic chemicals in our homes to allergies, birth defects, cancer and psychological abnormalities.

• The EPA warns toxic chemicals in household cleaners cause women working at home to have a 55% higher cancer risk than women working outside the home.

• The Mayo clinic warns Formaldehyde (Q15) is a formaldehyde releaser, which means it can release formaldehyde its self and it is in most household and personal care products to preserve them. It can irritate the respiratory system, cause skin reactions, and trigger heart palpitations, aggravate coughs, colds, trigger asthma. Serious side effects include weakening the immune system and cancer. More seriously, it is a human mutagen and is carcinogenic.

• The Harvard School of Public Health warns, Formaldehyde can cause headaches, depression, joint pain, chronic fatigue, chest pains ear infections, dizziness and loss of sleep.

• The California Public Research Group warns Phenol, which is used in most household disinfectants, can cause cancer, deactivate the sensory nerve endings, and damage the liver, kidneys and central nervous system.

• There has been a 30% increase in breast cancer since 1982.Breast cancer is the Number ONE killer of women between 35 and 54. Primary suspects are laundry detergents, household cleaners and pesticides according to the National Cancer Association.

As a cancer survivor and mother of four, I educate others how to change your environment to prevent cancer. Your body does its own healing if you stop absorbing, inhaling and ingesting chemicals. Here are some tips:

• Purchase a reliable one by sticking with well known brands like: Maxtor, Seagate, Western Digital, etc. These companies have long established histories.

• Manual or Automatic Backup? Not all units come equipped to automatically back up your data. Make sure to read the information and determine if it will fit your needs.

• Capacity: 250 gig, 500 gig, 1 Terabyte? If you are storing pictures, videos, music- purchase a unit with a lot of capacity for storage.

• Price: These drives range in price from $80 and up. Price will depend on the brand, size and if it performs automatic backups.

Note: These units can fail so if the data is extremely important — take precautions by having an alternate backup plan! There are companies that provide data retrieval however it can be extremely expensive and there might not be a guarantee of successfully retrieving your data.

• Keep it in its carrying case. This will protect the screen from cracks and it’s a good way to keep it safe as you travel from place to place.

• Back up your files if you don’t want to take a chance of losing them.

• Keep your eye on the laptop when placing it in the airport security conveyor belt, many laptops look the same.

• Password protect it so that others do not have access to your files.

• Do not save any personal password or account number information in the laptop hard driver—a hacker could gain access and you might have your identity stolen.

• Tag all your laptop accessories with your business card, many items look the same and someone might accidentally grab your equipment.

• Do not access personal sites like your bank account if you are using a free WIFI connection at a public location.

• Before you place it in its carrying case, shut it down to prevent overheating. Closing the lid does not shut down the computer.

• Unplug all accessories from the laptop before packing it in the carrying case to prevent any damage or potential overheating.

• Do not leave your laptop inside a car in extreme weather conditions for a long period of time. If you do have to and it is very cold, make sure to give it some time to adjust to room temperature before powering it back up.
